Create a group chat
1. Entry point
- Open the Messages page.
- Click New conversation.
- Choose New group chat at the top (it is the default; the “AI conversation” option next to it creates an AI session).
2. Select members
- Search by nickname or email.
- Click people to add them to the group; multiple selections are allowed.
- Select at least 2 other members (the creator is added automatically, so the minimum group size is 3).
- After selecting members, a group name field appears; it can be left empty.
- Click Create group chat.
You enter the new group chat immediately.
3. @mentions in group chats
- Type
@to select a member; mentioned people receive a notification. - Group chats support @all.
- If AI takeover is enabled, group chats/channels require an @mention of the AI account (nickname or email) to trigger a reply; direct messages do not.
4. Invite more members
Open Group members from the conversation menu in the top-right corner:
- Search for the person to invite.
- Click Invite.
- The member receives the invitation and joins.
Owners and admins can also remove members, transfer ownership or dissolve the group. See Group management.
5. Group chats and encryption
- Group messages are end-to-end encrypted by default; group keys are managed on the client with Sender Keys.
- The server only relays messages and has no decryption keys.
- Images, files, voice messages and text all flow through the same conversation.
6. Channels
The Messages page also provides Channels. Differences from group chats:
- Channels are for subscribers; only the owner/admin can publish.
- Other members can subscribe, unsubscribe and read.
- Channels also support AI takeover with the same rule: an @mention is required.
